Following the horrific tornado which devastated Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, like many artists, approached community representatives to offer assistance. We tour regularly throughout the United States, and since we’re currently touring the Midwest, we suggested a benefit performance with the objective of helping to restore some semblance of normalcy to children and families.
Our offer was eagerly accepted, and the company collaborated with its long-time presenter at nearby Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville, AR, to arrange for a performance of its acclaimed production, A Brown Bear, a Moon and a Caterpillar: Treasured Stories by Eric Carle. The event will take place on Tuesday, March 13 at the Memorial Middle School in Joplin, with entrance being offered at no charge to local students, teachers and parents as a gift from Mermaid Theatre and the Walton Arts Center. Initial response has been highly enthusiastic, and it is anticipated that all seats will be filled quickly. The Middle School is home to 700 students, and plays a vital role in coordinating artistic and education activities for its entire home community.
Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia is pleased to be celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year. The company ranks among North America’s most active touring companies.
