We’re so pleased that Mermaid has just completed their 3-month tour of the UK. The company members have scattered and the freight is on its way back to Nova Scotia, but I thought it would be nice to follow the tour across the UK from the lovely emails I received back in the office. Thanks to everyone who worked to make these shows happen and all those who came out to see us!
Note: These emails have been edited for length and consistency.

We have just returned from your 16.30 performance at the Oxford Playhouse and wanted to email and say what a tremendous show. My wife and I have two girls, approaching 4 & 2 and they read The Very Hungry Caterpillar pretty much every night before bed so they know the story well (and so do we!). Even as adults coming to what is primarily a children’s show, we thoroughly enjoyed it and you surpassed our expectations completely. The characters and bright, beautiful colours made it a very entertaining show and to think that it was puppetry was amazing… I can only imagine the amount of hard work that must go into such a physical performance. The only disappointment for me was no DVD to buy at the end…had there been one, I would have snapped it up for the kids to see one of the favourite books and characters (‘Caterpillar’) animated.
Thanks again and I wish you well with your remaining tour in the UK… it appears you have a very busy schedule!

We recently watched the company’s performance of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Little Cloud and The Mixed Up Chameleon in Plymouth Theatre Royal.
My Daughter is just over 2 years old, and she thoroughly enjoyed it, as did we. We were touched by how beautifully the story was told, and thought the puppets where wonderfully performed and created , it brought our favourite childhood stories to life! We could have watched the performance again and again, we actually watched the video on the Mermaid Theatre Website to re-live the tale!
Many Thanks to you all again for such a brilliant show!!!

We just wanted to say thank you and say how much we enjoyed the performance of the Very Hungry Caterpillar and other stories. We saw it in Derby UK last weekend and both the children and I were amazed by the beauty of the show. As a parent of young children we have been too many puppet shows and theatre performances aimed at young children, and yours was far and away the best (and brightest!) we have ever seen.

I took my 2 young daughters, aged 2 and 4, and my mother (she was probably the most excited of the 3) to see the Very Hungry Caterpillar show today in Bournemouth in the UK and I just wanted to say how fantastic it was. We all loved it and had a wonderful afternoon. Please could you pass our thanks on to the team who made it possible.
I hope there will be further tours here in the future.

I just wanted to congratulate & thank you all on the wonderful show we saw recently in Derby in the UK. It was a 3rd birthday treat for my daughter & her first ever visit to the theatre & she loved it & has talked about it many times since.
Being just 3, she, of course, remembers stuff from a slightly different viewpoint. When asked about her trip by a friend of mine she said ‘It was fantastic, the carpet was stripey’! Oh well!

We took our 8 month old daughter to Plymouth Theatre, UK, to see The Very Hungry Caterpillar last month, and wanted to write to say what a huge success it was. We had thought that we would probably need to take her out after 10 or 15 minutes but she was entranced! The combination of music and puppets captivated her – and her parents! We thought it was all very well done indeed, and your non-shushing policy made it a relaxing experience for us too. So thank you from us all for a lovely afternoon.

I just wanted to write having seen The Very Hungry Caterpillar at Richmond Theatre this morning with my son and nephew (who are 2 and 5 years old). The performance was amazing, wonderfully visual for such small children and the performers were amazing, especially as the theatre was noisy at times and their question and answer session was handled brilliantly.
As an Early Years teacher I’m always looking for productions to take my classes of children to; I very much hope that your company will be touring in London again soon.

I have just returned home after taking my 2 grandchildren to see The Hungry Caterpillar at Richmond Theatre. I was wary of taking my 3 year old grandson as he has the attention span of a flea but he and his 5 year old sister were completely mesmerized by your performance. The whole thing was simply magic and such a joy to see something that had nothing offensive in it. I’m sure they will see the book in a very different light when they next read it.

Today I took my 3 year old son and my mother to your production of The Very Hungry Caterpillar in Hull, UK. I just wanted to let you know how much all 3 generations of our family enjoyed the show. You brought Eric Carle’s fabulous stories alive with your clever puppets and music. The question & answer session at the end was really good – fascinating to see some of the techniques including the UV lighting. Please pass on my praise to the performers & production team – they did a great job!

Just wanted to drop you an email to tell you how much I enjoyed your performance of The Very Hungry Caterpillar at Buxton, UK. I took my class to see the performance on Friday and it was adored by both the children and the adults alike. The children were fascinated by the puppets and were so intrigued as to how it all happened, so the Q&A at the end was right on the button for us!! It was educational, interactive and fun! A teachers dream!
I loved it all so much that the next day I rang the box office and booked tickets for my own family! And you know what? It was just as fantastic second time around. So a big, big thank you to you all at the Mermaid, it will stay in our memories forever as the best theatre performance we have been to!
P.S. I am now looking forward to a fun packed week at school filled with activities related to your stories from Eric Carle!

Just a quick email to thank you and your team for the fabulous performance of [The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favourites]. We went to the performance today at the Embassy theatre in Skegness (Lincolnshire). Our little girl, who is just 2, loved the performance.

Just a little note to say a great big thank you for the wonderful performance you all gave today at The Palace Theatre in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex in the U.K! You made a little girl very happy making her favourite story come alive, I’m sure it will be embedded in her memory forever!!
